Allied Health Science Course Descriptions
As an Allied Health Science major at Carthage, you’ll take courses and electives in allied health science, biology, chemistry, exercise and sports science, and physics.
Please note: The following courses are offered by the Allied Health Science Department. Some allied health science majors and minors require courses offered by other departments. Please refer to those areas of study for those course descriptions.
Introduction to Health Care Professions
AHS 1020 / 2 credits
The course is an introduction to various aspects of the health care field. Students will explore a variety of health-related disciplines and create an academic plan for their chosen career path. Specific health care pathways available at Carthage will be looked at more thoroughly. The concept of interprofessional practice will be introduced and strategies implemented. Students will have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning activities.

Introduction to Music Therapy
AHS 1300 / 2 credits
This course will provide an overview of the health care profession of Music Therapy with a focus on the principles, frameworks, and applications of therapeutic music across a variety of clinical populations. Basic brain and neurological responses to music as well as the social and psychological influences of music will be explored.

Interprofessional Practice in Healthcare: Innovation
AHS 3000 / 4 credits
Students will work within an interprofessional team to develop and deliver a community outreach program, education event or collaborative government project. Weekly peer discussions will provide a sharing and reflection of their experiences.
Structural Kinesiology
AHS 3080 / 4 credits
Structural kinesiology is the study of the muscles as they are involved in movement. This class will cover in detail the origin, insertion, function, and innervation of the major skeletal muscles as they relate to human movement.

Offered in Spring
Interprofessional Practice: Immersive Experience
AHS 4000 / 4 credits
The student will experience a clinical, internship, or field placement in their preferred healthcare field. Participation in a TeamSTEPPS workshop will provide the student with interprofessional practice knowledge before beginning the assigned experience. The final project will consist of a case study poster presentation.

Health Care Informatics
AHS 4439 / 2 credits
The course provides the student with fundamental knowledge of the concepts of health informatics and how technology can be used in the delivery of health care.
Prerequisite: AHS 4469 with a grade of C- or better
Evidence-Based Practice in Health Care
AHS 4469 / 4 credits
The student is to apply scholarly research methods mastered in Evidenced Base Practice in Healthcare. The student will produce a secondary research paper on a faculty approved topic culminating in a poster presentation at the Celebration of Scholars.
Prerequisite: EXS 2330 with a grade of C- or better

Senior Seminar
AHS 4900 / 4 credits
The student is given the opportunity to apply methods of scholarly research mastered in AHS 4465 Evidence-Based Practice in Health care. The student is expected to write a literature review on a faculty-approved topic.
Prerequisites: AHS 4469
Offered in Spring
