Carthage offers several scholarship funds to support students who need financial assistance to participate in study abroad and experiential learning programs, including J-Term.

Gutkind-Kraemer Scholarship

The Gutkind-Kraemer Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in French and intending to become teachers, and who are studying in France. This scholarship was established by Irène Kraemer, Carthage’s former vice president of the School of Professional Studies and professor of modern languages, in honor of her parents.

Mary Katherine Kent-Rohan Scholarship

The Mary Katherine Kent-Rohan Scholarship is awarded to students who plan to study abroad, who demonstrate leadership potential, and whose careers and lives would benefit the greatest from studying abroad. Scholarship recipients may be, but do not need to be foreign language majors or minors. Mary Katherine Kent-Rohan was a German professor at Carthage. *Recommendations from the foreign languages or study abroad faculty are highly encouraged.

Lili Sorokin Scholarship

The Lili Sorokin Scholarship provides financial assistance for Carthage students who wish to study abroad, who demonstrate leadership potential, and whose careers and lives would benefit the greatest from studying abroad. Scholarship recipients may be, but do not need to be, foreign language majors or minors. Professor Lili Sorokin taught at Carthage for many years. *Recommendations from the foreign languages or study abroad faculty are highly encouraged.

PATRICIA PIERMAN LARSON AND DAVID ALLEN LARSON SCHOLARSHIP

The Patricia Pierman Larson and David Allen Larson Scholarship provides financial support for students wishing to study abroad. Preference will be given to those students studying a foreign language.

Rita Petretti Endowed Scholarship

The Rita Petretti Endowed Scholarship provides support for students who wish to study abroad for a semester or a year and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to students enrolled in an Italian program (though not required) and to women.

Stephanie Jones Scholarship

The Stephanie Jones Scholarship provides support for a sophomore, junior, or senior traveling for the first time with the Carthage Choir to Europe and who displays a strong desire to share this traveling and performing experience with fellow choir members.

Jessica Norman Nicaragua J-Term Study Tour Scholarship

The Jessica Norman Nicaragua J-Term Study Tour Scholarship is available to students who wish to participate in the Nicaragua J-Term study tour, are majoring in biology, and have sophomore standing or above.

Dr. Patrick Pfaffle Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Patrick Pfaffle Memorial Scholarship provides support for students who wish to participate in the Nicaragua J-Term tour and have demonstrated financial need. This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Pat Pfaffle, who taught at Carthage for many years and created the Nicaragua J-Term program.

Thomasina Mae Montemurro Madrigrano Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship

The Thomasina Mae Montemurro Madrigrano Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship, established as part of the 150 Years of Carthage Women Celebration, provides scholarships for juniors and seniors who graduated from a Kenosha County high school (public or private), participating in a short-term study abroad experience. The recipient must demonstrate initiative and creativity, entrepreneurial skills, leadership, and resilience. Recipient(s) must write a brief paper after the experience. *Preference will be given to a female student. Students receiving full-tuition scholarships are not eligible to receive this award. An essay is required.

Carthage Study Abroad Fund

The Carthage Study Abroad Fund provides support to students seeking to participate in any short- or long-term study away experience.

HOW TO APPLY

Scholarship applications are closed for J-Term 2025 (January and Summer) and for semester programs beginning in Spring 2025, Fall 2025, or Summer 2025.

Applications will be managed and awarded through the Office of Student Financial Services in collaboration with the Director for Education Abroad and faculty leading trips. All applicants must be approved by the faculty tour lead. Where noted, preferences are simply preferences and not requirements.

Application requirements include:

A brief statement explaining how you meet the eligibility requirements.
A faculty or staff recommendation.
Details regarding the experience for which you seek funding.
An essay explaining how this experience will further your academic or career aspirations.
